Yulara is the purpose-built resort village that serves as the gateway to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It's the only accommodation option within striking distance of the iconic red monolith, offering a comfortable base with a surprisingly lively atmosphere. The resort complex is a self-contained oasis in the desert, with hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, and shops all within walking distance of each other. It’s designed to blend into the landscape, with low-rise buildings and native gardens that soften the transition between luxury and the raw outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru at Sunrise & Sunset: The main event is just 20 minutes away by car. Head to the designated viewing areas for the ever-changing colours of the rock as the sun hits it.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas): A 40-minute drive takes you to the domed formations of Kata Tjuta, where the Valley of the Winds walk is a must-do for its dramatic scenery.
- Wintjiri Wiru Sunset Dinner: An extraordinary outdoor dining experience with a drone light show that tells the Mala story, set against the desert sky.
- Field of Light: Bruce Munro's immersive art installation of 50,000 spindles of light that comes alive at dusk. Book ahead for a magical evening.
- Cultural Centre & Dot-Painting Workshops: Visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre for indigenous art and stories, or join a workshop at the resort to create your own souvenir.
- Desert Awakenings Tour: A guided bush tucker walk with an Anangu guide, finishing with sparkling wine as the sun rises over Uluru.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate three days and two nights to properly experience Uluru and Kata Tjuta. This allows for sunrise and sunset at Uluru, a full day for walks at Kata Tjuta, and a relaxed afternoon exploring the resort's cultural offerings. If time is tight, a two-day, one-night stopover can still capture the essentials: sunset at Uluru, a morning walk, and a quick visit to Kata Tjuta. The resort itself is compact, so you won't waste time commuting.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas): Just 40 km west, these 36 domed rock formations offer quieter walks and equally stunning sunsets.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A 3.5-hour drive northeast, the rim walk here is one of the best day hikes in the Red Centre.
- Alice Springs: About 4.5 hours north, it's the usual gateway for those flying in and driving to Uluru. Combine with a stop at the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Mount Connor: A lesser-known flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance. Worth a photo stop.
