Carved into the ancient conglomerate domes of Kata Tjuta, the Valley of the Winds is a sacred and dramatic walk that rewards with ever-changing desert panoramas. Unlike the monolithic Uluru, Kata Tjuta is a cluster of 36 weathered rock domes, and this loop trail takes you deep into their heart, past rust-red walls, spinifex-clad gullies, and silent gorges. The trail is physically demanding but spiritually enriching, offering a profound connection to the Anangu people's Tjukurpa (creation stories).
Highlights & What to See
- Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) – The entire dome field is a highlight; the walk weaves between these ancient, rounded giants.
- Karingana Lookout – A first viewpoint that reveals the scale of the domes and the layered colours of the rock.
- Walpa Gorge – A narrow cleft between domes, where cool breezes funnel and rare plants cling to the walls.
- Sunrise and sunset colour shifts – The domes blaze deep orange and purple at dawn and dusk, best seen from the Karu Lookout on the return loop.
- Desert wildlife – Look for red kangaroos, perentie lizards, and birdlife like the zebra finch and spinifex pigeon in the cooler hours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full morning or late afternoon (4–5 hours) for the complete 7.4 km loop. Start early (before 8 am) to avoid midday heat and to catch the soft light on the domes. The track is rated Grade 4 – steep, rocky, and uneven – so allow extra time for photography and rest stops. If you're short on time or fitness, the shorter Walpa Gorge walk (2.6 km return, 1 hour) offers a taste of the landscape.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru (Ayers Rock) – 45 minutes drive east; combine with the Base Walk or a sunrise viewing at the Talinguru Nyakunytjaku lookout.
- Kata Tjuta Dune Viewing Area – A short walk from the car park offering a sweeping panorama of the entire dome field.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre – Learn about Anangu culture, art, and the park's natural history before or after your walk.
- Field of Light – A stunning art installation by Bruce Munro, best experienced at dusk (bookings essential).
- Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) – 3 hours drive north; the Rim Walk is a spectacular day trip from Uluru.
