The Red Centre Way is Australia’s ultimate outback road trip, a 660-kilometre loop from Alice Springs that threads through the ochre heart of the Northern Territory. This is the land of Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and Kings Canyon, where the desert shifts from spinifex plains to towering rock domes and ancient gorges. Driving the Red Centre Way is a pilgrimage through Indigenous Tjukurpa (Dreaming) stories, under skies so clear the Milky Way feels close enough to touch. It’s a journey best taken slowly, with stops for walks, cultural experiences, and watching the light change over the continent’s most iconic landmarks.
Highlights & What to See
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – The big two: Uluru’s ever-changing colours at sunrise or sunset, and the domes of Kata Tjuta, where the Valley of the Winds walk delivers spine-tingling views.
- Kings Canyon – Rim walk along the sandstone cliffs of Watarrka National Park; the 6km loop is a must for its sheer scale and the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- West MacDonnell Ranges – A series of chasms and waterholes en route from Alice Springs: Standley Chasm, Ormiston Gorge, and the ochre pits of Ellery Creek Big Hole are perfect for a dip.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Access the ancient Palm Valley, home to red cabbage palms found nowhere else, via a 4WD track through the Finke River.
- Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve – A striking sandstone bluff layered in red, orange, and white, best seen in the late afternoon light.
- Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve – A 50-metre sandstone pillar rising from the desert, sacred to the Arrernte people and a landmark on the old Ghan route.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least 3–4 days to drive the full loop without rushing. Most travellers split it as: Day 1 from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon (via West MacDonnells), Day 2 Kings Canyon to Uluru (via the Stuart Highway or the 4WD route through Ernest Giles Road), Day 3 Uluru-Kata Tjuta, and Day 4 back to Alice Springs via the Lasseter Highway. If you have a campervan or are happy with basic accommodation, you can stretch it to 5 days to include walks and a night at a roadhouse. The route is sealed except for a few unsealed sections (like the Mereenie Loop to Kings Canyon), so check road conditions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The gateway town, worth a day for the Desert Park, Anzac Hill, and the Telegraph Station.
- Simpson Desert – For off-road adventurers, the Simpson’s red dunes and remote campsites are a serious 4WD extension.
- Finke River – One of the world’s oldest rivers; explore its course through the West MacDonnells or join a tour to learn about its cultural significance.
- Larapinta Trail – If you have more time, a multi-day trek along the West MacDonnell Ranges offers a deeper immersion into the landscape.
- Uluru – While the whole park is on the loop, many travellers spend an extra day for the Field of Light installation or a dot-painting workshop.
