Imagine a vast, shimmering expanse of bubblegum-pink water stretching to the horizon, framed by endless blue skies and dusty red earth. That's Hutt Lagoon, one of Australia's most surreal natural wonders. Located along the Coral Coast, this pink lake is best appreciated from the air or from a lookout point, where its vibrant colour – caused by the algae Dunaliella salina and high salinity – creates a photographer's dream. While it's a long drive from the Red Centre, it's a spectacular detour for those craving an otherworldly landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Hutt Lagoon Lookout: The main vantage point off Port Gregory Road offers stunning views over the pink waters, especially at midday when the colour is most intense.
- Scenic flights from Geraldton: For the full effect, take a light plane or helicopter ride – the contrast between the pink lagoon, turquoise ocean, and green farmland is unforgettable.
- Port Gregory: A tiny fishing village at the lagoon's edge; wander the beach and chat with locals about the salt-harvesting history.
- Wildflower spotting: In spring (August–October), the surrounding heathland erupts with colourful everlastings and orchids.
- Hutt River Province: Nearby, the self-declared principality offers quirky photo ops and a sense of outback eccentricity.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the lagoon lookout and a quick stop in Port Gregory. If you're driving from Geraldton (about 1 hour north), you can easily do it as a half-day trip. For serious photographers or those adding a scenic flight, allow a full day. Combine with a visit to Kalbarri National Park (1.5 hours south) to make a rewarding two-day loop from Geraldton.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
