Pilbara Region
Welcome to the Pilbara, a vast and ancient landscape in Western Australia where rust-red earth meets deep blue gorges and some of the oldest rock art on Earth. This is a place of raw, elemental beauty, where the heat shimmers over spinifex plains and the night sky blazes with stars. For the intrepid traveller, the Pilbara offers a profound connection to Australia’s geological and Indigenous heritage, with dramatic national parks, outback stations, and the iconic mining towns of Newman and Port Hedland serving as gateways.
Highlights & What to See
- Karijini National Park – The crown jewel of the Pilbara, with plunging gorges like Hancock and Weano, crystal-clear swimming holes, and walks through ancient rock formations. Don’t miss the view from Oxer Lookout.
- Millstream-Chichester National Park – A surprising oasis of permanent pools and palm-fringed creeks, perfect for birdwatching and a cool dip after a day on the red dirt.
- Dampier Archipelago – Over 40 islands offering world-class fishing, snorkelling, and the chance to see petroglyphs at Murujuga National Park, home to one of the world’s densest collections of rock art.
- Pilbara’s Ancient Rock Art – Visit the Burrup Peninsula or the remote rock shelters of the Hammersley Range to see millennia-old carvings and paintings, including the mysterious ‘Pilbara Man’.
- Tom Price & the Scenic Drive – Australia’s highest town, with views over the Hamersley Range and access to the stunning Mount Nameless walking trail. The drive from Tom Price to Karijini is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the Pilbara’s scale and beauty, allocate at least 5–7 days. Spend 3–4 days in Karijini National Park to explore the main gorges and do a few longer hikes, then add 1–2 days for Millstream-Chichester and a day trip to the Dampier Archipelago. If you’re self-driving, factor in long distances between sites—the region is vast and the roads can be rough. A 4WD is essential for many tracks, and you’ll want to carry plenty of water and fuel.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Ningaloo Reef – About 5 hours west, this fringing reef offers world-class snorkelling with whale sharks and manta rays.
- Exmouth – Gateway to Ningaloo and a great base for marine adventures, with Cape Range National Park nearby.
- Broome – A longer drive (10+ hours) north, but worth it for Cable Beach, the Kimberley, and the famous Staircase to the Moon.
- Karijini National Park – Already listed above, but it’s so central that you can easily combine it with a loop through Newman and the Great Northern Highway.
- Port Hedland – A major mining port with interesting industrial tours and nearby salt flats.
