Port Hedland is a rugged outback port town on the Pilbara coast, known for its massive iron ore export industry and dramatic tidal ranges. The town pulses with industrial energy, yet offers surprising pockets of natural beauty and Indigenous culture. This is a place where colossal ships glide past red dust plains, and the Indian Ocean meets the ancient Pilbara landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Marapikurrinya Park – A peaceful lookout over the harbour, ideal for watching the immense ore carriers and learning about the area's maritime history.
- Port Hedland Historical Museum – Housed in an old stone building, this museum captures the town's pearling, mining and wartime stories.
- Pretty Pool – A natural tidal pool perfect for a dip at high tide, surrounded by red rocks and mangroves.
- Don Rhodes Mining Museum – An open-air museum with giant mining trucks and historic trains, offering a hands-on look at the region's industrial backbone.
- Spinifex Hill Artists – An Aboriginal art centre where you can buy authentic paintings and meet local artists.
- Staircase to the Moon – From March to October, the full moon rising over the mudflats creates a stunning optical illusion of a staircase reaching the sky (check local tide charts).
Suggested Time to Spend
Port Hedland is best as a one- to two-day stopover on a broader Pilbara road trip. Spend the first morning exploring the mining museum and historical museum, then head to Pretty Pool for a relaxing afternoon swim. If you're staying overnight, catch sunset at Marapikurrinya Park or look for the Staircase to the Moon. The town is compact, so you can cover the main sights easily in a day, but allow extra time if you want to visit the artists' centre or take a guided cultural tour.
