Rising dramatically from the desert floor, Kings Canyon is a breathtaking spectacle of sheer sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient rock formations. Part of Watarrka National Park, this natural wonder offers some of the most rewarding walks in the Red Centre, combining jaw-dropping scenery with rich Aboriginal cultural heritage. Whether you peer over the canyon's edge or explore its lush, hidden amphitheatres, this place leaves an indelible mark.
Highlights & What to See
- Rim Walk: This iconic 6km loop takes you to the canyon's edge, past weathered domes known as the 'Lost City', and down into the cool, palm-shaded Garden of Eden – a permanent waterhole and oasis.
- Kings Creek Walk: A shorter, easier trail that follows the sandy creek bed into the canyon, offering excellent views of the towering cliffs without the full climb.
- Sunrise and Sunset Views: The canyon walls glow fiery red and orange at dawn and dusk; head to the main lookout near the car park for prime photo ops.
- Aboriginal Cultural Sites: The area is sacred to the Luritja people; interpretive signs along the walks explain traditional uses of plants and the Dreamtime stories tied to the landscape.
- Kings Canyon Resort: A great base for meals, a swim, and stargazing – the night sky here is incredibly clear, far from city lights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Kings Canyon, arriving early to tackle the Rim Walk before the heat sets in (start by 8am in summer). If you're less inclined to hike, half a day is enough for the Kings Creek Walk and a scenic flight over the canyon. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight at the resort to catch both sunset and sunrise, and explore the canyon without rushing.
