Katherine is the rugged gateway to the Top End's wild heart, a town that blends outback grit with lush riverine life. The mighty Katherine River cuts through town, and the nearby Nitmiluk National Park offers world-class gorges, waterfalls, and Aboriginal rock art. With a strong Indigenous culture, a lively local food scene, and a frontier feel, Katherine is an essential stop on any self-drive journey between Darwin and Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge: A series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Explore by canoe, cruise, or hike the Jatbula Trail for stunning escarpment views and ancient rock art.

Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least two full days to appreciate Katherine. Spend Day 1 exploring Nitmiluk Gorge with a morning canoe or cruise and an afternoon walk; Day 2 can cover the hot springs, caves, and cultural sites. If you're a keen hiker, the Jatbula Trail demands 4–5 days, but a day walk to the first gorge is rewarding. Katherine is best visited during the dry season (May–October) when the weather is pleasant and the gorges are accessible.
