Daly Waters is a tiny, iconic outback pub stop on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, famous for its historic Daly Waters Pub – a ramshackle, character-filled roadhouse festooned with travellers' memorabilia, bras, and business cards. This is the quintessential Australian outback experience: ice-cold beer, hearty pub meals, and a genuine sense of frontier hospitality under a blazing red sky.
Highlights & What to See
- Daly Waters Pub – The legendary pub is the main event. Sink a cold one on the verandah, admire the eccentric decor (including a ceiling covered in foreign currency), and chat with fellow travellers and locals.
- Daly Waters Historic Airstrip – This was a major refuelling stop for Qantas flying boats in the 1930s and later for WWII military aircraft. The original runway and a small museum with photos and artefacts tell the story.
- Stockyard Gallery & Sculpture Garden – A quirky outdoor gallery featuring whimsical metal sculptures and local art, just a short walk from the pub.
- Nightlife at the Pub – Live music, bush poetry, and impromptu singalongs happen regularly. It’s the social hub of the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pull over for an hour or two – enough for a cold drink, a photo at the pub, and a quick look at the airstrip. If you can, stay overnight in the pub’s basic rooms or the adjacent campground to soak up the sunset and the convivial evening atmosphere. A longer stop doesn’t really make sense unless you’re using it as a base to explore nearby Larrimah or the remote wetlands.
