Katherine Town is the vibrant gateway to the Top End's rugged outback, straddling the Katherine River around 300 kilometres south of Darwin. This friendly frontier town offers a compelling mix of Indigenous culture, dramatic gorges, and thermal springs, making it an essential stop on any self-drive itinerary between Darwin and the Red Centre. The local Jawoyn people have deep connections to this landscape, and their stories add a rich layer to the region's natural wonders.
Highlights & What to See

- Top Didj & Cultural Experience – Join an immersive Indigenous tour where you can try your hand at spear throwing, fire lighting, and painting with ochre, led by local artists.
- Springvale Homestead – One of the Northern Territory's oldest homesteads, now a pub and campground offering live music, cold beer, and a glimpse into outback station life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience Katherine's highlights without rushing. Spend the first day exploring Nitmiluk Gorge via a morning canoe trip and an afternoon walk to one of the lookout points. If you have a third day, consider a scenic flight over the gorge or a day trip to Mataranka's thermal pools and Elsey National Park.
