Katherine Town is the vibrant gateway to the Top End's rugged outback, straddling the Katherine River around 300 kilometres south of Darwin. This friendly frontier town offers a compelling mix of Indigenous culture, dramatic gorges, and thermal springs, making it an essential stop on any self-drive itinerary between Darwin and the Red Centre. The local Jawoyn people have deep connections to this landscape, and their stories add a rich layer to the region's natural wonders.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to experience Katherine's highlights without rushing. Spend the first day exploring Nitmiluk Gorge via a morning canoe trip and an afternoon walk to one of the lookout points. Dedicate the second morning to the Cutta Cutta Caves and a soak at the Hot Springs, followed by a visit to the museum or Top Didj. If you have a third day, consider a scenic flight over the gorge or a day trip to Mataranka's thermal pools and Elsey National Park. Many travellers use Katherine as a comfortable overnight stop between Darwin (3 hours north) and Alice Springs (5 hours south).
