HMAS Sydney II Memorial
Perched on a low hill on the outskirts of Geraldton, the HMAS Sydney II Memorial is a poignant and beautifully designed tribute to the 645 men lost when the light cruiser was sunk in a 1941 battle with the German raider Kormoran. The memorial's striking architecture — a soaring dome of silver seagulls in flight — and its setting over the Indian Ocean make it one of Australia's most moving war memorials.
Highlights & What to See
- Dome of Souls: The memorial's centrepiece, an open dome formed by 645 silver seagulls, each representing a crew member. Walk beneath it and feel the solemnity of the space.
- Stele Walk: A path lined with bronze plaques telling the story of the ship, its crew, and the battle — a quiet, reflective experience.
- Missing Crew Memorial: A granite wall etched with the names of all those lost, with a bronze sculpture of a sailor looking out to sea.
- Viewing Platform: Panoramic views of Geraldton and the coast, where the ship was last seen heading toward its fate.
- Interpretive Centre: Small but informative, with artefacts recovered from the wreck site and personal stories of the crew.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least one hour to fully appreciate the memorial and its setting. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light for photos and a more contemplative atmosphere. Combine with a stop at the nearby Geraldton War Memorial and a walk along the foreshore for a half-day exploring the city's maritime heritage.
