Plunging into a deep, emerald plunge pool, Florence Falls is one of the most photogenic and rewarding swimming holes in Litchfield National Park. The twin waterfalls cascade over a sandstone escarpment, creating a cool oasis surrounded by monsoon forest. A steep staircase leads down to the pool, where you can swim in the clear, refreshing water while listening to the roar of the falls. It's a quintessential Top End experience that combines dramatic scenery with a blissful dip.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim at the base of the falls – The plunge pool is deep and inviting, perfect for cooling off after the walk down. The water is clear and cool, offering a refreshing contrast to the tropical heat.
- Florence Creek Walk – A 2.6 km loop trail that follows the creek downstream from the falls, passing through pockets of monsoon rainforest and open woodland. Look for birds, butterflies, and perhaps a freshwater crocodile sunning itself on a rock.
- Scenic lookout – A short walk from the car park leads to a platform with panoramic views over the gorge and falls. It's a great spot for photos, especially in the late afternoon when the light softens.
- Nature and wildlife – Keep an eye out for rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and goannas. The surrounding woodland is home to wallabies and dingoes, especially at dawn and dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1–2 hours for a visit that includes the walk down to the pool, a swim, and time to explore the creek walk. If you're combining Florence Falls with other Litchfield highlights like Wangi Falls or Buley Rockhole, plan for a full day (6–8 hours) in the park. The falls are best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and the midday heat.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Buley Rockhole – A series of natural rock pools just a short drive away, perfect for a relaxed swim and picnic. Great for families.
- Wangi Falls – Another iconic waterfall with a large swimming area and a café. It's the most popular spot in the park, especially on weekends.
- Litchfield National Park – The park itself is a highlight, with termite mounds, magnetic termite mounds, and other waterfalls like Tolmer Falls and Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek).
- Batchelor – A historic mining town with a museum, cafes, and accommodation options. It's a good base for exploring the park.
- Berry Springs Nature Park – About 30 minutes south of Darwin, this is another great swimming spot with clear pools and picnic areas, often less crowded than Litchfield.
