Plunging over the edge of a rugged sandstone escarpment in Litchfield National Park, Tolmer Falls is one of the Northern Territory's most dramatic waterfalls. Unlike many of the park's swimming holes, this cascade is sacred to the local Wagait Aboriginal people, and swimming is prohibited—but the view from the lookout is mesmerising. The falls drop into a deep, fern-lined pool, often catching rainbows in the spray, and the surrounding escarpment is home to rare ghost bats and orange leaf-nosed bats. It's a place of raw beauty and cultural significance that rewards quiet contemplation.
Highlights & What to See
- The main lookout: A short, wheelchair-accessible walk leads to a platform with panoramic views of the falls and the gorge. Early morning or late afternoon light is best for photography.
- Tolmer Falls Walk: A 1.6 km return trail descends into the gorge, offering closer views of the plunge pool and the monsoon forest clinging to the cliffs. The track is steep in parts but well-maintained.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for the rare ghost bats that roost in crevices behind the falls—best seen at dusk when they emerge to feed.
- Nearby cascades: Combine with a visit to Florence Falls (a short drive south) for a swimming-friendly alternative, or Wangi Falls for a larger plunge pool.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at Tolmer Falls, enough time to take in the lookout and do the short walk. If you're keen on the full Tolmer Falls Walk, budget 45 minutes to an hour. The falls are part of a loop drive through Litchfield National Park, so you can easily combine them with other waterfalls and termite mounds in a day trip from Darwin (1.5 hours north) or a longer self-drive itinerary.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Litchfield National Park termite mounds: The giant magnetic termite mounds near the park entrance are a fascinating stop.
- Darwin: The capital city offers markets, museums, and a vibrant food scene—a great base for exploring Litchfield.
