Plunging into a deep, emerald-green pool fringed by monsoon rainforest, Wangi Falls is one of Litchfield National Park's most iconic and refreshing spectacles. The twin cascades thunder over a sandstone escarpment, creating a cool mist that drifts across the plunge pool. This is the Territory at its most idyllic — a place where you can swim beneath a waterfall, picnic on grassy banks, and feel utterly immersed in the Top End's lush, ancient landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the plunge pool: The large, sandy-bottomed pool is perfect for a cooling dip. Float on your back and watch the water tumble down the cliffs above — it's a quintessential Litchfield experience.
- Look for wildlife: Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles (they're harmless but best left alone), colourful kingfishers, and the occasional agile wallaby that comes to drink at the water's edge.
- Walk the Tabletop Track: The falls are a key point on this 39 km loop trail. For a shorter option, take the 1.6 km Wangi Falls Walk that climbs to the top of the escarpment for panoramic views over the forest canopy.
- Visit the café and picnic area: Well-maintained facilities make it easy to spend the day. Grab a coffee or a cold drink at the kiosk, then settle in for a barbecue under the shade of paperbark trees.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between one and three hours at Wangi Falls — enough time for a swim, a short walk, and a picnic. If you're keen to hike the Tabletop Track or simply want to laze by the water, plan for half a day. The falls are at their most spectacular in the wet season (November to April), but swimming is safest and most popular during the dry season (May to October) when currents are gentle.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Buley Rockhole: A series of natural rock pools connected by small cascades — perfect for a relaxing soak and a favourite with families.
- Tolmer Falls: A dramatic single-drop waterfall that plunges into a deep pool surrounded by cliffs. Swimming isn't allowed here, but the lookout is stunning.
- Litchfield National Park: Beyond the waterfalls, explore the magnetic termite mounds, the Lost City sandstone formations, and the park's many walking trails.
- Batchelor: This historic mining town, 20 minutes south of the park, has a few cafés, a pub, and the delightful Batchelor Butterfly and Petting Farm.
