Broome's Chinatown is a dusty, character-packed historic precinct that recalls the town's pearling heyday. Once the heart of a multicultural community of Japanese, Malay, Chinese and Filipino pearl divers, today its corrugated-iron buildings house galleries, boutiques, and excellent cafes. The air smells of frangipani and salt, and the streets are lined with boab trees. It's a compact area, perfect for a leisurely stroll, and the best place to absorb Broome's unique frontier-meets-tropical atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- Sun Pictures – The world's oldest operating outdoor cinema, built in 1916. Watch a movie under the stars on wooden deckchairs, with the occasional fruit bat swooping overhead. A quintessential Broome experience.
- Pearl Luggers – Tour a restored pearl lugger and learn about the dangerous history of pearling, which put Broome on the map. The stories are as vivid as the pearls themselves.
- Chinatown's Street Art & Murals – Keep an eye out for the striking murals that depict Broome's multicultural past, including the famous 'Japanese Cemetery' mural on Dampier Terrace.
- Courthouse Markets – Held on Saturdays and Sundays (dry season), this bustling market under the boab trees is perfect for local crafts, pearls, and fresh tropical fruit. Arrive early to beat the heat.
- Matso's Broome Brewery – A lively spot for a cold ginger beer or mango ale, with a courtyard that feels like the heart of Chinatown. Great for people-watching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to explore Chinatown's main streets and visit a couple of key attractions. Combine it with a morning at Cable Beach or a sunset camel ride for a full Broome day. If you're a shopper or history buff, allow a full day to browse the galleries and take a pearl lugger tour. The precinct is compact, so you can easily return for dinner or a movie at Sun Pictures in the evening.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
