Gantheaume Point

Gantheaume Point, a dramatic red-rock headland jutting into the turquoise Timor Sea near Broome, is a mesmerising collision of geology and legend. The rust-coloured cliffs, pounded by surf, are streaked with iron and honeycombed with caves, while at low tide the exposed reef reveals a natural wonder: dinosaur footprints preserved in stone for 130 million years. This is a place where the ancient past feels palpably present, and where the vivid contrast between the ochre rocks and the impossibly blue water creates a scene that photographers dream of.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself at least 1–2 hours to fully appreciate Gantheaume Point. Time your visit for low tide (check tide charts in advance) to see the dinosaur footprints; combine with a late afternoon arrival so you can stay for sunset. If you’re a keen photographer or dinosaur enthusiast, allow up to half a day to explore the reef and cliff line at leisure.
