Gantheaume Point, a dramatic red-rock headland jutting into the turquoise Timor Sea near Broome, is a mesmerising collision of geology and legend. The rust-coloured cliffs, pounded by surf, are streaked with iron and honeycombed with caves, while at low tide the exposed reef reveals a natural wonder: dinosaur footprints preserved in stone for 130 million years. This is a place where the ancient past feels palpably present, and where the vivid contrast between the ochre rocks and the impossibly blue water creates a scene that photographers dream of.
Highlights & What to See
- Dinosaur footprints – At low tide, walk the reef flat to see the unmistakable three-toed tracks of theropods embedded in the sandstone; rangers often give impromptu talks.
- Gantheaume Point Lighthouse – Climb the low hill for sweeping views of Cable Beach and the Indian Ocean; the lighthouse itself is a charming historic structure.
- Red-rock cliffs and blowholes – Explore the eroded cliff faces and, during big swells, watch water spout dramatically from crevices in the rock.
- Sunset viewing – The point is one of Broome’s best spots to watch the sun sink into the sea, painting the cliffs in fiery shades.
- Staircase to the Moon – On certain nights from March to October, the full moon rising over the exposed tidal flats creates an optical illusion of a staircase climbing to the moon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least 1–2 hours to fully appreciate Gantheaume Point. Time your visit for low tide (check tide charts in advance) to see the dinosaur footprints; combine with a late afternoon arrival so you can stay for sunset. If you’re a keen photographer or dinosaur enthusiast, allow up to half a day to explore the reef and cliff line at leisure.
