Derby, a rugged port town on King Sound, is the West Kimberley’s oldest European settlement and a gateway to some of Australia’s most dramatic landscapes. With its massive tidal range (up to 12 metres), boab-studded streets, and a palpable frontier history, Derby feels authentically remote. It’s a logical stop for travellers heading to the Gibb River Road or the Buccaneer Archipelago, and offers a surprisingly rich taste of Kimberley life.
Highlights & What to See
- Derby Wharf & Jetty – Stroll the 500-metre jetty, one of the longest in Australia, and watch the incredible tidal extremes. At low tide the mudflats stretch for kilometres; at high tide the water laps at the pylons.
- Boab Prison Tree – A massive, hollow boab tree that once served as a temporary lock-up for Indigenous prisoners. It’s a powerful, sobering site with interpretive signs about the region’s Aboriginal history.
- Mowanjum Aboriginal Art & Cultural Centre – Just 10 km from town, this community-run centre showcases spectacular Wandjina and Gwion Gwion rock-art-inspired works. The artists often paint on-site, and the quality is world-class.
- Derby Gaol & Museum – A small but evocative museum in the original 1890s gaol, with exhibits on pearling, pastoralism, and the local Indigenous culture.
- King Sound & Wharf Walk – Walk out along the jetty at sunset for vast views over the sound; keep an eye out for dolphins, rays, and even saltwater crocodiles.
- Gibb River Road Gateway – Derby marks the western start of the legendary 660-km Gibb River Road, a 4WD route through station country, gorges, and waterfalls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one full day in Derby to see the main sights, visit Mowanjum, and stock up for the Gibb River Road. If you’re not tackling the Gibb, you could still spend a night here – the sunset from the wharf is a highlight. For those on a Kimberley itinerary, Derby is best as a one-night stop en route between Broome and the Gibb or the Buccaneer Archipelago.
