Ross River Homestead
Nestled in the heart of the MacDonnell Ranges, Ross River Homestead is a working cattle station turned iconic outback retreat that offers a genuine taste of life under the big sky of Australia's Red Centre. Set on the banks of the normally dry Ross River, this historic property (established in the 1920s) combines pioneer heritage with modern-day adventure. It's the kind of place where you can swap city noise for the crackle of a campfire, explore ancient gorges, and sleep in a rustic cabin or under a blanket of stars.
Highlights & What to See
- Homestead Heritage Walk – Wander the original stone buildings, shearing shed, and blacksmith's workshop to get a feel for station life a century ago.
- N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park – A short drive or guided tour away, this hidden valley shelters more than 6000 ancient Aboriginal rock carvings (petroglyphs) and diverse wildlife.
- Ross River scenic drive – The route through the East MacDonnell Ranges is spectacular, with red-rock cliffs, ghost gums, and dry creek beds that flood after rare rains.
- Campfire dinners and outback hospitality – The homestead's restaurant serves hearty bush tucker-inspired meals, often followed by star-gazing sessions or a didgeridoo performance.
- Walking and 4WD tracks – Explore the station's vast paddocks on foot or by four-wheel drive; keep an eye out for kangaroos, wallabies, and wedge-tailed eagles.
- Swimming in the Ross River – After a good wet season, the river fills and offers a refreshing (and very photogenic) swimming hole.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that one night is enough to soak up the atmosphere, take a short walk, and enjoy the homestead experience. However, to fully explore N'Dhala Gorge and perhaps tackle a longer hike or 4WD loop, plan for two nights. Day-trippers from Alice Springs (about 100 km east) can manage a full day, but you'll miss the magic of sunset and sunrise over the ranges.
