Deep in the red heart of the Northern Territory, Arltunga Historical Reserve offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's gold rush era. Established in 1887, this remote settlement was once the site of a bustling mining community, and today its well-preserved ruins and interpretive displays tell the story of hardship, hope, and resilience in the harsh outback. As you wander among the stone buildings, mineshafts, and machinery, you'll feel the echoes of the past in this starkly beautiful landscape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least half a day (4–5 hours) to fully appreciate Arltunga. The drive from Alice Springs is about 100 km east along the Ross Highway, much of it on unsealed road, so allow 1.5 hours each way. Combine the visit with a picnic lunch at the reserve, and take time to walk the short trails. For keen history buffs, a full day including a stop at the nearby Trephina Gorge Nature Park makes for a rewarding loop.
