Flowing through the heart of the Red Centre, Riverland is a lush ribbon of life that cuts through the arid outback. This isn't a single town but a stretch of the Finke River system, where ancient waterholes and ghost gums create a starkly beautiful contrast to the red desert. It's a place for quiet contemplation, birdwatching, and connecting with the deep Indigenous history of the Arrernte people, who have lived along these waters for tens of thousands of years.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke River: One of the world's oldest rivers, its sandy bed often dry but with permanent waterholes that are vital refuges for wildlife. Walk along its banks to spot birdlife and ancient cycads.
- Palm Valley: A hidden oasis within Finke Gorge National Park, home to the rare red cabbage palm. The 4WD track is an adventure in itself, and the valley offers short walks among towering palms.
- Ochre Pits: A sacred Aboriginal site where ochre has been mined for millennia for ceremonial use. The vibrant colours of the cliffs are a photographer's dream.
- Standley Chasm: A dramatic narrow chasm that glows fiery orange at midday when the sun is directly overhead. It's on private land (Iwupataka), with a gentle walk to the chasm.
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct: A former Lutheran mission with beautifully preserved stone buildings, offering insight into the region's more recent history and the work of artist Albert Namatjira.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself a full day to explore the Riverland area from Alice Springs. Most of the key sites are along the Mereenie Loop Road (4WD recommended) or accessible via sealed roads to Hermannsburg. Start early to catch the morning light at Standley Chasm, then head to Palm Valley for a walk before the heat sets in. If you have two days, you can take a slower pace and include a night under the stars at one of the bush camps along the Finke River.
