Marla
Marla, a tiny roadhouse settlement on the Stuart Highway in the far north of South Australia, is the last outpost of civilisation before the red dust of the NT takes over. It’s a classic outback stop: fuel up, grab a pie, and soak in the vast, empty horizons that define the Red Centre. For travellers on the legendary drive from Adelaide to Alice Springs, Marla is a strategic rest point with a surprising dose of local character.
Highlights & What to See
- Marla Roadhouse – The heart of the town, serving hearty roadhouse fare and cold drinks. It’s a great spot to chat with fellow travellers and locals, and to stock up on supplies.
- Stargazing – With virtually zero light pollution, the night sky here is a spectacle. Lie back and watch the Milky Way stretch across the desert.
- Witjira National Park – A short drive east, this park protects the stunning Dalhousie Springs, a series of natural artesian hot springs perfect for a soak after days on the road.
- Oodnadatta Track – This historic dirt road runs parallel to the old Ghan railway line and is dotted with ruins and floodplain wetlands. It’s a classic 4WD route that starts near Marla.
Suggested Time to Spend
Marla is a stopover, not a destination – most travellers spend just a night or a few hours refuelling. If you’re keen to explore Witjira National Park or the Oodnadatta Track, budget two full days. Otherwise, an overnight stay is enough to break the long drive and enjoy a sunset beer under the outback sky.
