Finke National Park
Finke National Park, cradled in the heart of the Red Centre, is a rugged sanctuary of ancient river red gums and ochre-hued gorges. This off-the-beaten-track gem offers a raw, unpolished slice of Outback Australia, where the Finke River—one of the world’s oldest waterways—carves through the landscape. It’s a place for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with the land, far from the crowds of Uluru.
Highlights & What to See
- Finke River: Walk along the sandy bed of this ancient river, flanked by towering red gums. The river is often dry, but its sheer scale and the play of light on the cliffs are mesmerising.
- Palm Valley: A lush oasis of rare red cabbage palms (Livistona mariae), found only here. The 4WD track in is an adventure itself, but the valley’s cool, shaded walks are a surreal contrast to the surrounding desert.
- Boggy Hole: A permanent waterhole that’s perfect for a swim or a picnic. The campground here is basic but wonderfully peaceful under the stars.
- Kallipara Lookout: A short climb rewards you with panoramic views over the park’s layered ranges and the winding river below.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience Finke National Park, allocate at least a full day—ideally two if you want to hike and camp. The 4WD tracks (especially to Palm Valley) are slow going, so plan for a relaxed pace. Arrive early to avoid the midday heat, and bring plenty of water, food, and fuel as there are no services inside the park.
