Stretching east from Alice Springs, the East Macdonnell Range is a rugged spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges and desert oases that feels a world away from the town's bustle. This is the Red Centre at its most intimate — fewer crowds than the West Macs, but equally dramatic landscapes where ochre cliffs, ghost gums and permanent waterholes create a stark, beautiful contrast. A self-drive along the Ross Highway unlocks a series of hidden gems that reward walkers, swimmers and sunset chasers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Emily Gap — a sacred site to the Arrernte people, this narrow cleft in the range is painted with ochre rock art and filled with cool water; the short walking track offers a powerful introduction to the region's cultural landscape.
- Corroboree Rock Conservation Area — a striking dolomite outcrop that was an important ceremonial site; the easy loop walk reveals ancient fossils and sweeping views over the plain.
- Trephina Gorge Nature Park — arguably the star of the east, with towering red cliffs, permanent waterholes and excellent walks including the 1.5 km gorge track and the longer John Hayes Walk that climbs to panoramic views.
- N'Dhala Gorge Nature Park — an extraordinary gallery of over 5,000 Aboriginal petroglyphs etched into the rock; the 1.5 km walk through the gorge is a must for history buffs and offers a chance to spot black-footed rock wallabies.
- Arltunga Historical Reserve — the ghost of a 19th-century gold rush town, with well-preserved ruins, a museum and a self-guided drive trail that brings the harsh pioneer life into sharp focus.
- Ross River Homestead — a historic pub and campground that makes a great lunch stop or overnight stay, with a genuine outback atmosphere and cold beer on tap.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to explore the highlights from Alice Springs, but two days allows a more relaxed pace and the chance to linger at Trephina Gorge for sunset. Many travellers combine a morning at Emily Gap and Corroboree Rock, then head to Trephina for the afternoon, with the option of pushing east to N'Dhala Gorge and Arltunga on a second day. If you're camping or staying at Ross River Homestead, you can break the journey and enjoy the quiet starry nights.
