Stretching for 160 km west of Alice Springs, the West Macdonnell Range is a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, deep gorges, and permanent waterholes. This landscape, sacred to the Arrernte people, offers some of the Northern Territory's most accessible yet wild outback experiences. The rugged beauty and rich indigenous heritage make it an essential stop on any Red Centre itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A scenic gorge with a permanent waterhole, home to black-footed rock-wallabies. Best visited in the soft light of late afternoon.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, dramatic cleft in the rock that glows fiery orange when the sun hits directly around midday. A short, easy walk leads to the chasm.
- Ochre Pits – Ancient ochre deposits used by Arrernte people for ceremonial painting. The layered colours of white, yellow, and red are striking.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A large, deep waterhole perfect for a refreshing swim after a hike. The surrounding red cliffs create a stunning amphitheatre.
- Serpentine Gorge – A narrow, winding gorge with a lookout offering panoramic views. The walk to the lookout is short but steep.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the western end of the range, often reflecting the red cliffs in its still waters. It's a great spot for birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully appreciate the West Macdonnell Range, plan for at least one full day, ideally two. A day trip from Alice Springs allows you to visit the highlights like Simpsons Gap and Standley Chasm, but staying overnight at Glen Helen Resort or camping at one of the many bush camps lets you experience the gorges at sunrise and sunset, when the colours are most vivid and wildlife is active.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
