Watarrka National Park, home to the iconic Kings Canyon, is a dramatic desert landscape in the heart of Australia's Red Centre. The park's towering sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient rock formations offer some of the most spectacular hiking in the Outback. This is a place where the raw power of nature is palpable, and the silence of the desert is broken only by bird calls and the rustle of spinifex. For international travellers, it's an essential stop on any self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Uluru, providing a deep connection to the region's geology and Indigenous heritage.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate a full day for Watarrka. Arrive early (by 8am) to tackle the Rim Walk before the heat sets in – it takes 3–4 hours. If you're not up for the full rim, the Kings Creek or Kathleen Springs walks each take about an hour. Many travellers stay one or two nights at Kings Canyon Resort or the nearby campground to catch sunrise and sunset, and to break up the drive between Alice Springs (3.5 hours) and Uluru (3 hours).
