Watarrka National Park, home to the iconic Kings Canyon, is a dramatic desert landscape in the heart of Australia's Red Centre. The park's towering sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient rock formations offer some of the most spectacular hiking in the Outback. This is a place where the raw power of nature is palpable, and the silence of the desert is broken only by bird calls and the rustle of spinifex. For international travellers, it's an essential stop on any self-drive itinerary between Alice Springs and Uluru, providing a deep connection to the region's geology and Indigenous heritage.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The park's signature experience – a 6km loop that climbs to the canyon rim, offering dizzying views across the chasm and the surrounding desert. The 'Garden of Eden' waterhole is a surprising oasis where you can cool off (weather permitting).
- Kings Creek Walk: A shorter, easier trail that follows the sandy creek bed into the canyon, perfect for a quick taste of the gorge's scale and serenity.
- Kings Canyon & Kathleen Springs: A gentle 2.6km walk to a permanent waterhole, rich with Aboriginal cultural significance and a favoured spot for birdwatching.
- Sunrise or Sunset at the Canyon: The sandstone walls glow fiery orange and red as the sun dips low – a photographer's dream.
- Star Gazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is a blanket of stars; many nearby lodges offer astronomy tours.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day for Watarrka. Arrive early (by 8am) to tackle the Rim Walk before the heat sets in – it takes 3–4 hours. If you're not up for the full rim, the Kings Creek or Kathleen Springs walks each take about an hour. Many travellers stay one or two nights at Kings Canyon Resort or the nearby campground to catch sunrise and sunset, and to break up the drive between Alice Springs (3.5 hours) and Uluru (3 hours).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: A 3-hour drive southwest – combine Watarrka with Uluru and the domes of Kata Tjuta for the ultimate Red Centre road trip.
- Alice Springs: The gateway town to the Outback, 3.5 hours north, with cultural centres, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: Stunning gorges and waterholes like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Gorge, en route from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Remote, 4WD-only park with the ancient Palm Valley, a few hours east of Watarrka.
