Carved through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) is a stunning series of 13 gorges that form the heart of Nitmiluk National Park, about 30km from Katherine. This is a place of immense natural beauty and deep Indigenous significance—the Jawoyn people have lived here for tens of thousands of years, and their stories are woven into the landscape. The sheer cliffs, plunging gorges, and tranquil waterholes offer a dramatic escape into the Top End's rugged outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge cruises – The classic way to experience the gorge; take a guided boat tour that navigates through the first two or three gorges, with commentary on geology, wildlife and Jawoyn culture.
- Canoeing and kayaking – Paddle your own way through the calm waters; you can hire a canoe and spend hours exploring the lower gorges at your own pace.
- Nitmiluk Gorge walking trails – Several walks, from short lookouts (like the 2.6km Baruwei Loop) to the multi-day Jatbula Trail (58km, 5 days) that follows the river and ends at the stunning Edith Falls.
- Edith Falls (Leliyn) – A short drive from the main gorge; a beautiful, tiered waterfall with a large, swimmable plunge pool surrounded by paperbarks and pandanus.
- Scenic helicopter flights – For a jaw-dropping aerial perspective, take a chopper ride over the full length of the gorge system—the sheer scale and colour of the cliffs is unforgettable.
- Swimming and cooling off – In the dry season (May–September), the lower gorge waterholes are safe and refreshing; always check for crocodile safety signs.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate Nitmiluk, plan for at least a full day. A morning gorge cruise (2–3 hours) followed by an afternoon walk or canoe hire is a perfect pace. If you have two days, add the Edith Falls loop walk and a sunset cruise or helicopter flight. The Jatbula Trail requires a dedicated 5-day hike, but most visitors are happy with a day trip from Katherine or as a stopover on the way to Kakadu.
