Imagine stepping into a warm, crystal-clear pool surrounded by palms and paperbarks, the water a constant 34°C – that's Mataranka Thermal Pool. This natural spring-fed oasis in the Northern Territory's Elsey National Park is a beloved swimming spot and a piece of Outback history, famously inspiring the setting of Jeannie Gunn's 'We of the Never Never'. It's a dreamy place to cool off after a day of driving the Stuart Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Thermal Pool itself: Float in the warm, mineral-rich waters fed by the Roper River. The pool is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, creating a perfect contrast with the red dirt of the Outback.
- Rainbow Spring: A short walk from the main pool, this smaller thermal spring is equally inviting and often less crowded.
- Elsey National Park: Beyond the pool, explore walking trails through monsoon forests and along the Roper River, where you might spot freshwater crocodiles and birdlife.
- Mataranka Homestead: Visit the historic homestead and museum to learn about the region's pastoral and pioneering history, including the story of 'We of the Never Never'.
- Bitter Springs: About 10 km north, this series of thermal springs offers a more natural swimming experience in a beautiful bush setting.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day relaxing at the thermal pool and exploring the immediate area. If you want to walk some of the park's trails or visit Bitter Springs, allow a full day. The pool is open 24/7, but sunrise or late afternoon are magical times to avoid crowds and enjoy the soft light.
