Deep in the Northern Territory’s limestone country, Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park offers a cool, otherworldly escape from the red desert heat. These ancient tropical karst formations, honeycombed with stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate helictites, have been shaped by water over millions of years. The caves are also home to a colony of endangered ghost bats, adding a touch of nocturnal mystery. A guided tour (the only way to visit) reveals both the geological wonders and the cultural significance of this site to the Jawoyn people. It’s a compact but memorable detour for anyone exploring the Stuart Highway between Katherine and Mataranka.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate about 1–1.5 hours for the guided cave tour plus time to stroll the nature walk and browse the interpretive centre. Tours run at set times (usually mid-morning and early afternoon), so plan your arrival accordingly. The caves are a perfect stopover for an hour or two while driving between Katherine (30 minutes south) and Mataranka. There’s no accommodation on site, so time your visit for a morning or afternoon break.
