Mataranka is a tiny outback town in the Northern Territory's Roper Gulf region, famous for its thermal springs and lush, palm-fringed waterholes that feel like an oasis in the red desert. The main draw is the crystal-clear, 34°C water of Mataranka Hot Springs, which flows through a series of natural pools surrounded by paperbark trees. This is a quintessential stop on the Stuart Highway, offering a refreshing break between Katherine and Tennant Creek. The town also has a fascinating history tied to the 1902 novel We of the Never Never, and visitors can explore the homestead that inspired the book. Wildlife abounds, with birds, fish, and even freshwater crocodiles in the nearby Roper River.
Highlights & What to See
- Mataranka Hot Springs – Soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the main pool, or walk a short distance to the quieter Bitter Springs for a more serene experience. The water is so clear you can see turtles and fish swimming around you.
- Elsey National Park – This park protects the springs and the surrounding savanna. Take the short walk to the Roper River lookout, or paddle a canoe along the river to spot freshwater crocs and jabirus.
- Mataranka Homestead – Visit the replica of the original Elsey Station homestead, which features in the book and film We of the Never Never. It now houses a museum and a quirky bar.
- Never Never Museum – Located in the town centre, this small museum tells the story of the region's pastoral history and the local Indigenous people, the Mangarayi.
- Roper River – A great spot for fishing (barramundi, saratoga) or a leisurely boat cruise. The river is also a haven for birdlife, including brolgas and black-necked storks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stop for a half-day to soak in the hot springs and explore the homestead. If you have a campervan or tent, consider staying overnight at the Mataranka Homestead campground – the springs are at their best early in the morning before the crowds arrive. A full day allows you to also take a short walk or canoe trip in Elsey National Park. For a more leisurely pace, combine Mataranka with a night in Katherine (about 1.5 hours north) to visit Nitmiluk Gorge.
