Mataranaka Hot Springs
Hidden in the rugged MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs, Mataranaka Hot Springs is a serene oasis where warm thermal water bubbles into a natural rock pool. Surrounded by red cliffs and spinifex grass, this off-grid spot offers a blissful soak under vast Outback skies — a true reward after exploring the region's gorges and trails.
Highlights & What to See
- Soak in the main pool: The warm, mineral-rich water (around 38°C) is perfect for relaxing tired muscles. The pool is shallow and rock-lined, with a gentle flow from the spring.
- Sunset bathing: Visit late afternoon to watch the cliffs glow orange and red as the sun dips below the horizon — the water stays warm as the air cools.
- Birdwatching and wildlife: Keep an eye out for zebra finches, honeyeaters, and the occasional kangaroo coming to drink. The spring attracts a surprising amount of life.
- Short walks: Explore the surrounding spinifex country on a 1-2 km walk from the carpark. Look for ancient cycads and weathered rock formations.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Soak in the pool after dark and watch the Milky Way stretch overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours, including a soak and a short wander. It's best visited late afternoon to catch sunset and stay for stars. The site is small, so you won't need a full day — combine it with a morning hike at nearby Ormiston Gorge or Standley Chasm.
