Kings Canyon is a dramatic chasm carved into the red sandstone of Watarrka National Park, about 300 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs. The sheer 100-metre walls and the cool, palm-lined gorge floor create a landscape that feels both ancient and otherworldly. It's a highlight of the Red Centre and an essential stop on any outback self-drive itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day at Kings Canyon. The Rim Walk takes 3–4 hours, and you'll want extra time for the shorter trails, sunset, and a meal at the resort. If you're on a tight schedule, a half-day (morning or late afternoon) can still be rewarding, but you'll miss the full experience. Overnight stays are popular to catch both sunset and sunrise.
