Watarrka National Park, home to the iconic Kings Canyon, is a stunning desert landscape of sheer sandstone cliffs, palm-filled gorges, and ancient rock formations. Located in the Northern Territory's Red Centre, this park offers some of the most dramatic and accessible outback scenery, with a rich cultural history tied to the Luritja people.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk: The park’s signature experience, a 6km loop that climbs to the canyon rim for breathtaking views across the amphitheatre of weathered rock, the 'Lost City' domes, and the lush Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Kings Creek Walk: A gentler, shorter walk along the canyon floor, leading to a lookout with views of the towering cliffs – perfect for a quick yet rewarding taste of the park.
- Kathleen Springs Walk: A wheelchair-accessible 2.6km trail to a serene spring-fed waterhole, offering insights into local Aboriginal culture and the area's pastoral history.
- Sunset Viewing: Watch the sandstone walls of Kings Canyon blaze orange and red as the sun sets – a photographer’s dream from the designated sunset viewing area near the resort.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the park offers incredible night skies; join a guided astronomy tour or simply lie back and marvel at the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to do justice to Watarrka. Most visitors tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk early in the morning (start before 8am to beat the heat) – it takes 3–4 hours. Afternoon is ideal for the shorter walks or a scenic helicopter flight. If you're pressed for time, you can see the highlights in a half-day by doing the Kings Creek Walk and a sunset visit. However, an overnight stay at Kings Canyon Resort allows for a more relaxed pace and the chance to experience sunrise or sunset at the canyon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Alice Springs: The hub of the Red Centre, 320km northeast, offering cultural experiences, the West MacDonnell Ranges, and services before heading into the park.
- West MacDonnell Ranges: A striking series of gorges and waterholes (like Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen) along Larapinta Drive, ideal for a scenic drive en route to or from Watarrka.
- Finke Gorge National Park: Home to the ancient Palm Valley, about 200km southeast, accessible by 4WD and offering a unique desert oasis landscape.
- Kings Creek Station: A working cattle station and campground just outside the park, offering quad bike tours, camel rides, and a chance to experience outback station life.
