Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) is a stunning series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, about 30km from the town of Katherine. This is a place of dramatic cliffs, tranquil waterholes, and rich Jawoyn Aboriginal culture. Whether you explore by canoe, cruise, or on foot, the scale and serenity of the gorge will leave you in awe.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise through the gorges: Take a guided boat tour (2hr or longer) that navigates through the first two or three gorges, with commentary on geology and Indigenous stories. The sunset cruise is especially magical.
- Canoe or kayak the gorge: Rent a canoe and paddle at your own pace through the calm waters of the first gorge, or portage between gorges for a full-day adventure. It’s the most intimate way to experience the towering cliffs.
- Walk the gorge rim: The Jatbula Trail (multi-day) and shorter walks like the Baruwei Lookout (20min) offer panoramic views over the gorge system. The 5.8km Leliyn (Edith Falls) walk is a highlight for swimming.
- Swim at natural plunge pools: During the dry season (May–Sep), swim in the clear pools at Leliyn (Edith Falls) or the lower gorge. Beware of crocodiles in the wet season.
- Discover Jawoyn rock art: Join a cultural tour to see ancient rock art and learn about the Dreamtime stories that connect the Jawoyn people to this landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at the gorge: a morning cruise or canoe trip, lunch at the Nitmiluk Centre, and an afternoon walk to a lookout. If you have more time, two days allow you to do a longer canoe trip (portaging to the third gorge) or hike sections of the Jatbula Trail. A half-day is enough for a quick cruise and short walk, but you’ll want to linger.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
