Edith Falls, part of the Litchfield National Park, is a stunning cascade plunging into a series of natural swimming holes. Surrounded by monsoon rainforest and rugged sandstone escarpments, it offers a refreshing escape from the outback heat. This is a must-visit for anyone exploring the Top End, combining spectacular scenery with excellent swimming and short walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Plunge Pool: The main waterfall drops into a large, deep pool perfect for swimming. The water is cool and clear, surrounded by pandanus palms and paperbark trees.
- Upper Pool: A short 1.5 km return walk leads to a smaller, more secluded swimming hole with its own cascade. Quieter than the main pool, it’s ideal for a peaceful dip.
- Edith Falls Loop Walk: A 2.6 km circuit that takes you past the upper pool and offers panoramic views of the escarpment and the waterfall from above. Allow 1–2 hours.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles (harmless, but do not feed them), birds like the rainbow bee-eater, and wallabies near the water’s edge at dawn and dusk.
- Picnic Areas: Well-maintained picnic tables and barbecues are available near the main carpark, making it a great spot for a lunch break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day (3–4 hours) is ample to enjoy the main pool, do the loop walk, and relax. If you want to swim in both pools and take your time, plan for 4–5 hours. Many visitors combine Edith Falls with other Litchfield attractions like Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole in a single day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Florence Falls: Another spectacular waterfall with a swimming hole, about 20 minutes south-east. The walk to the base is steep but rewarding.
- Buley Rockhole: A series of cascading rock pools perfect for a refreshing soak, just a short drive from Florence Falls.
- Wangli Falls: A large waterfall with a swimming hole, accessible via a 4WD-only track during the dry season. A great spot for a picnic.
- Litchfield National Park Visitor Centre: Stop here for maps and current conditions, especially after rain when some roads may be closed.
- Batchelor: A historic mining town with cafes and accommodation, about 30 minutes west of the park entrance.
- Darwin: The capital city of the Northern Territory, a 1.5-hour drive north. Combine Edith Falls with a longer itinerary exploring Kakadu and Darwin.
