Finke Gorge National Park, about 130 km west of Alice Springs, is a stunning landscape of ancient river red gums, rugged gorges, and the iconic Palm Valley – a hidden oasis where the rare Livistona mariae palms thrive. This is a place of deep cultural significance to the Arrernte people, and its dramatic geology tells a story millions of years old. For self-drive travellers, the 4WD-only access adds a sense of adventure, while the walking trails reveal a surprisingly lush, almost prehistoric world in the heart of the red centre.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full day to truly experience Finke Gorge. The 4WD drive from Alice Springs takes around 2–3 hours each way, and you'll want several hours to explore Palm Valley and take at least one walk. If you're camping, an overnight stay allows you to catch the golden light of dawn and dusk, and to tackle longer hikes like the 5 km Palm Valley Walk. For a self-drive itinerary, combine it with a morning at the West MacDonnell Ranges and an afternoon at Finke Gorge – but be prepared for a long day.
