Finke Gorge National Park
Finke Gorge National Park, a rugged slice of the Red Centre, is a place where ancient geology and Indigenous culture converge. The park protects the Finke River, one of the world's oldest river systems, and the iconic Palm Valley, a lush oasis of rare red cabbage palms. This is a landscape of dramatic gorges, ochre cliffs, and cool waterholes, offering a profound sense of timelessness.
Highlights & What to See
- Palm Valley: A 4WD-only drive leads to this extraordinary valley, home to the red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae), found nowhere else. Walk the short Kalaranga Lookout loop for panoramic views.
- Finke River: Walk along the sandy riverbed (dry most of the year) and marvel at the towering gorge walls. The river is culturally significant to the local Arrernte people.
- Boggy Hole: A permanent waterhole perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day. It's also a great spot for birdwatching, with zebra finches and budgerigars often seen.
- Mpulungkinya Walk: A 5 km return hike from Palm Valley that follows the Finke River through a narrow gorge to a secluded amphitheatre of rock.
- 4WD Adventure: The unsealed access road (Larapinta Drive then Namatjira Drive) is an adventure in itself, crossing the Finke River multiple times. A high-clearance 4WD is essential.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to truly experience the park. The drive from Alice Springs (about 130 km) takes 2 hours on unsealed roads, so start early. Spend the morning exploring Palm Valley and the Mpulungkinya Walk, then head to Boggy Hole for a swim and picnic lunch. If you have a second day, consider camping at the basic Finke River Campground to soak up the stillness at dawn and dusk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The gateway town to the Red Centre, with the Alice Springs Desert Park and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Museum.
- West MacDonnell National Park: A series of stunning gorges and waterholes (Ormiston, Glen Helen, and Simpsons Gap) just west of Alice, easily combined on a self-drive itinerary.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A 3-hour drive southwest, this dramatic canyon offers the iconic Rim Walk and is a must-see on any Red Centre road trip.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: A longer drive (5 hours) but unmissable for its cultural and natural significance. Combine with Kings Canyon for a classic loop.
