Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop on the Lasseter Highway, roughly halfway between the Stuart Highway and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. More than just a fuel station, it’s a genuine slice of Red Centre life where you can stretch your legs, grab a hearty feed, and soak up the vast, silent landscape. The roadhouse also serves as a small community hub for the nearby Imanpa Aboriginal settlement, giving you a glimpse into contemporary desert culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Outback hospitality: The roadhouse’s café and shop are famed for their homemade pies, cold drinks, and friendly service – a lifesaver on a long, hot drive.
- Aboriginal art gallery: Browse and buy authentic local artworks, including paintings and didgeridoos, created by artists from the surrounding Anangu communities.
- Mount Ebenezer lookout: A short walk behind the roadhouse leads to a low hill with panoramic views over the spinifex plains and the distant Musgrave Ranges – especially magical at sunset.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, wedge-tailed eagles, and, if you’re lucky, a perentie (Australia’s largest goanna) crossing the highway.
- Historic camel trough: A remnant from the Afghan cameleer era, this stone trough is a quirky photo stop near the fuel pumps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers stop for 30 minutes to an hour – enough for a meal, a gallery browse, and a quick lookout walk. If you’re not in a rush, budget an extra 20 minutes to enjoy the sunset from the lookout. The roadhouse is a convenient overnight stop for campervans (with basic powered sites), allowing you to break the drive between Alice Springs and Uluru into two relaxed days.
