Erldunda Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop at the junction of the Stuart and Lasseter Highways, serving as the last fuel and supplies point before heading into Uluru-Kata Tjuta Country. It’s a no-frills but essential hub for self-drive travellers crossing the Red Centre — part roadhouse, part campground, part cultural gateway. The vibe is pure outback: red dirt, big skies, and the hum of road trains.
Highlights & What to See
- Fuel up & stock up — Erldunda is the last reliable petrol station for 200 km heading west; grab snacks, cold drinks, and basic groceries before the Uluru leg.
- The Emu Farm — A quirky attraction where you can see and feed emus up close; it’s a fun, quick stop for families and a chance to photograph these iconic birds.
- Camping under the stars — The roadhouse has a basic campground with powered and unpowered sites, plus a few cabins; it’s a practical overnight spot if you’re breaking the drive from Alice Springs to Uluru.
- Outback sunset — The view west from the roadhouse is flat and endless; grab a takeaway beer from the shop and watch the sky turn orange and purple.
- Aboriginal art & souvenirs — The small shop sells local art, didgeridoos, and postcards — a good place to pick up a memento or ask about the area’s Anangu stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Erldunda is a stopover, not a destination. Most travellers pause for 20–30 minutes to refuel and stretch legs. If you’re camping or staying in a cabin, one night is enough — you’ll arrive in the late afternoon, watch sunset, and head off next morning. It works best as a strategic break between Alice Springs (200 km north) and Yulara (270 km west).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park — The main event, about 2.5 hours west; plan at least two days to see Uluru at sunrise and sunset and walk the Valley of the Winds.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) — A 2-hour drive south-west; don’t miss the Rim Walk for dramatic sandstone cliffs and the Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Alice Springs — 2 hours north; combine Erldunda with Alice’s cultural sites, the West MacDonnell Ranges, and the Alice Springs Desert Park.
- Mount Connor — A flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway; stop at the lookout for a photo — it’s often mistaken for Uluru from a distance.
- Curtin Springs Station — A working cattle station with a roadhouse and free camping; it’s 100 km west of Erldunda and a good alternative stop with more character.
