Menindee, a historic outback town on the banks of the Darling River in far western New South Wales, offers a surprising oasis of waterbirds, red gum forests, and frontier history. Once a key stop on the Cobb & Co coach route, it’s now a serene base for exploring the vast Menindee Lakes system and the rugged corner of the state where the outback begins.
Highlights & What to See
- Menindee Lakes: A series of shallow, ephemeral lakes that attract thousands of waterbirds, including pelicans, swans, and ducks. The best viewing is from the Kinchega National Park lookout or a boat ramp.
- Kinchega National Park: Explore the historic Kinchega Woolshed and shearing quarters, then walk the Darling River Drive for river red gums and kangaroos. Sunset over the lakes is mesmerising.
- Menindee Heritage Walk: A self-guided stroll past the 1860s courthouse, the old jail, and the Menindee Hotel – one of the oldest continuously licensed pubs in the state.
- Burke and Wills Dig Tree: A short drive south, this marked coolibah tree commemorates the ill-fated explorers’ 1860 expedition. A poignant slice of Australian exploration history.
- Darling River Run: The township is a great launch point for a self-drive along the Darling River, with fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching opportunities in the red gum-lined waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least one full day to explore the lakes and Kinchega National Park. If you’re keen on fishing or birdwatching, two days allow a relaxed pace. Most travellers combine it with a stop on the way to Broken Hill or the outback parks – half a day can cover the heritage walk and a lake lookout if you’re just passing through.
