The MacDonnell Ranges slice through the Red Centre like a geological spine, a series of ancient, rugged ridges that stretch east and west of Alice Springs. This is the heart of Arrernte Country, where ochre cliffs, deep gorges, and permanent waterholes offer a dramatic contrast to the surrounding desert. The ranges are a paradise for hikers, swimmers, and anyone craving a deep immersion in the Australian outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A stunning gap with a permanent waterhole, perfect for a short walk or bike ride. Look for black-footed rock-wallabies at dusk.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, sheer-walled chasm that glows fiery red when the sun is directly overhead (best visited around midday).
- Ormiston Gorge – One of the most spectacular gorges, offering a 7.5 km loop walk, swimming in the waterhole, and excellent birdwatching.
- Ochre Pits – An important Aboriginal site where ochre has been mined for thousands of years. The multi-hued cliffs are a photographer’s dream.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, permanent waterhole surrounded by red dolomite cliffs, ideal for a refreshing dip after a hike.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A dramatic gorge at the western end of the West MacDonnell Ranges, with a waterhole that reflects the towering red walls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least two full days to explore the West MacDonnell Ranges, and a third if you want to tackle the longer walks or venture into the East MacDonnells. The range stretches over 300 km, so driving between gorges takes time. Start early to beat the heat, and plan to swim at Ellery Creek or Ormiston Gorge in the afternoon. A four-wheel drive is not essential for the main sites, but it opens up more remote spots like the ghostly white pillars of the Paintball Gallery.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The gateway to the ranges, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum and the Desert Park.
- West MacDonnell National Park – The protected area that contains most of the highlights listed above.
- East MacDonnell Ranges – Less visited but equally dramatic, with sites like Trephina Gorge and N’Dhala Gorge.
- Larapinta Trail – A world-class long-distance hiking trail that follows the spine of the West MacDonnells. Even a day walk on a section like the one from Ormiston Gorge is rewarding.
- Finke Gorge National Park – Home to Palm Valley, a lush oasis with ancient cycads (requires 4WD).
