Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park is a dramatic chasm carved from red sandstone, offering some of the most breathtaking and accessible outback scenery in Australia's Red Centre. The sheer 100-metre walls, ancient cycads, and waterholes create a landscape that feels both timeless and alive. This is a must-stop on any Lasseter Highway itinerary between Uluru and Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Kings Canyon Rim Walk – The iconic 6 km loop, taking about 3–4 hours, leads you up steep steps onto the canyon rim. The views across the sheer cliffs and into the lush Garden of Eden – a permanent waterhole surrounded by relict cycads – are unforgettable.
- Kings Creek Walk – A gentler 2.6 km return stroll along the canyon floor, perfect for a shorter visit or when the heat is intense. It ends at a lookout with fine views of the canyon walls.
- Garden of Eden – This hidden pocket of green, fed by a natural spring, is a highlight of the Rim Walk. The sight of 100-million-year-old cycads against the red rock is surreal.
- Sunset Viewing – The canyon walls glow orange and red at sunset. The best vantage points are from the Kings Canyon Resort lookout or along the Lasseter Highway approach.
- Kings Canyon Scenic Helicopter Flights – For a bird’s-eye perspective, short helicopter rides offer jaw-dropping aerial views of the canyon and the surrounding George Gill Range.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to Kings Canyon. Arrive early (by 8 am) to tackle the Rim Walk before the heat builds; the walk typically takes 3–4 hours. If you’re short on time, the Kings Creek Walk can be done in about an hour. Overnight stays at Kings Canyon Resort allow for a sunset and sunrise experience – highly recommended. Those driving from Alice Springs (4.5 hours) or Uluru (3 hours) often spend one night here as part of a 3–5 day Red Centre loop.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – About 3 hours’ drive west, this is the iconic heart of the Red Centre. Combine with Kings Canyon for a classic outback itinerary.
- Watarrka National Park (wider park) – Explore lesser-known gorges and walking trails, such as the Kathleen Springs Walk, a short, accessible track with cultural significance.
- Alice Springs – The nearest major town, 4.5 hours east, offering supplies, cultural experiences, and the West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Lasseter Highway – The drive itself is a highlight, with vast red plains, desert oak forests, and occasional camel sightings. Break the journey at Curtin Springs or Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse.
