Katherine, the fourth-largest town in the Northern Territory, is a gateway to the dramatic landscapes of the Top End. Set along the banks of the Katherine River, this laid-back outpost offers a mix of Indigenous culture, outdoor adventures, and a thriving café scene that makes it a perfect stop on the Lasseter Highway self-drive itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) – A series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, best explored by canoe, cruise, or hiking trail. The sheer cliffs and Aboriginal rock art make this a must-see.
- Katherine Hot Springs – Natural thermal pools right in town, perfect for a relaxing soak after a day of driving. The crystal-clear water is a delight any time of year.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park – Limestone caves with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, home to rare orange horseshoe bats. Guided tours reveal the underground wonders.
- Top Didj & Art Gallery – An immersive Indigenous cultural experience where you can try your hand at spear-throwing, painting, and learn about bush tucker and traditional life.
- Katherine Museum – Housed in the original 1926 Australian Inland Mission hospital, this museum tells the story of the region’s pioneers, pastoralists, and the Overland Telegraph.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to experience Katherine properly. Day one can focus on Nitmiluk National Park – take a morning canoe trip or a scenic cruise, then hike the gorge rim in the afternoon. Day two can be split between the hot springs, Cutta Cutta Caves, and a cultural stop at Top Didj. If you're self-driving, Katherine makes an ideal overnight stop en route from Darwin to Alice Springs.
