Ers Rock Roadhouse
Ers Rock Roadhouse is a classic outback pit stop on the Lasseter Highway, roughly halfway between the Stuart Highway and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It’s the kind of place where red dust settles on everything, the petrol pump is your best friend, and the homemade pies are legendary. For road-trippers crossing the Red Centre, this is a welcome oasis – a chance to stretch legs, refuel both vehicle and body, and soak up a slice of genuine outback character.
Highlights & What to See
- Homemade pies and pasties – The roadhouse is famous for its flaky, generously filled pies (kangaroo and pepper is a local favourite). Grab one to go or sit at the simple counter and watch the desert go by.
- Outback memorabilia & museum – A small but charming collection of vintage road signs, historic photos, and pioneer artefacts that tell the story of the Lasseter Highway and the dream of finding Lasseter’s Reef.
- Fuel and supplies – One of the last reliable fuel stops before Uluru (or after, heading east). Also stocks basic groceries, camping gas, and ice – essential for self-drive travellers.
- Red Centre sunsets – The roadhouse’s wide-open position offers uninterrupted views of the desert horizon. Pull up a chair on the verandah and watch the sky turn from ochre to violet.
- Curious wildlife – Keep an eye out for dingoes, wedge-tailed eagles, and the occasional feral camel. The roadhouse is also a good spot for birdwatching around dawn and dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors stop for 30–45 minutes – enough for a pie, a coffee, and a browse of the museum. If you’re camping or travelling slowly, you could easily stretch to an hour, especially if you time your visit for sunset. There’s no accommodation on site, but the roadhouse is a perfect lunch break on the 4–5 hour drive from Alice Springs to Uluru.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – The big one, just 1.5 hours west. Plan to arrive in time for sunset at the Uluru sunset viewing area.
- Mount Conner (Attila) – A spectacular flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru. Worth a photo stop.
- Curtin Springs Station – A working cattle station with a roadhouse, campground, and guided tours. About 20 minutes east of Ers Rock.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – A 2.5-hour drive north via the Luritja Road. Combine for a classic Red Centre loop.
- Alice Springs – The gateway town, 4 hours east. Stock up here before heading west, or stop on your way back.
