Cutamundra
Cutamundra is a remote roadhouse settlement on the Lasseter Highway, serving as the last stop for fuel and supplies before heading into the heart of the Red Centre. Surrounded by spinifex-covered plains and the odd ghost gum, this no-frills outpost offers a genuine taste of the outback, with a small store and a caravan park that’s a welcome sight for travellers crossing the vast emptiness between Uluru and Alice Springs. It’s not a destination in itself, but a practical and atmospheric pause that embodies the raw, quiet beauty of Australia’s interior.
Highlights & What to See
- Roadhouse stop: Fill up your tank, grab a cold drink, and stock up on basic supplies – the friendly roadhouse is the only game in town and a classic outback experience.
- Outback landscapes: Pull over just beyond the settlement to photograph the endless red-earth plains, mulga scrub, and the stunningly clear night skies – this is one of the best places in Australia for stargazing.
- Mount Connor lookout: A short drive west, this flat-topped mesa (often mistaken for Uluru) offers a striking silhouette at sunrise or sunset, with a viewing platform and interpretive signs.
- Curtin Springs Station: A working cattle station 30 km further west, where you can see historic homestead buildings, meet the resident camels, and learn about desert station life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cutamundra itself is a 15-minute stop – just long enough to refuel and stretch your legs. If you’re self-driving, plan to arrive in the late afternoon so you can push on to Curtin Springs or Mount Connor for sunset, then continue to Yulara (Uluru) for the night. Most travellers pass through in a single day as part of a longer Red Centre itinerary, but the caravan park is a basic option if you want to break the drive and enjoy the outback silence.
