Butterfly Gorge is a hidden gem in the Red Centre, a narrow chasm carved into rust-coloured quartzite by the Finke River. The name comes from the swarms of butterflies that gather here after rain, but even in dry times the gorge is a striking place: cool, shaded, and surprisingly lush with ferns and cycads. It feels like a secret oasis in the desert, and because it's off the main tourist trail, you'll often have it to yourself.
Highlights & What to See
- Butterfly Gorge itself – Walk into the narrow cleft where the walls close in; after rain, thousands of butterflies flutter among the rock figs.
- Finke River – One of the world's oldest river systems; the dry sandy bed makes a natural highway for walkers.
- Palm Valley – A short drive away, this palm-fringed valley is home to the rare red cabbage palm and offers longer walks.
- Kings Canyon – About two hours north, this dramatic sandstone canyon is a must-do for its rim walk and Garden of Eden waterhole.
- Watarrka National Park – Encompasses Kings Canyon and offers excellent birdwatching and desert wildflowers in season.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore Butterfly Gorge and combine it with Palm Valley. The walk into the gorge is short (about 1 km return), so you can take it slow, picnic by the river, and still have time to drive the scenic loop through Palm Valley. If you're keen on longer hikes, add a full day for Kings Canyon – best done early morning to avoid the heat.
