Ormiston Gorge is a stunning red-rock chasm in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering some of the best swimming, hiking, and wildlife-spotting in the Red Centre. The permanent waterhole at the base of the gorge is a refreshing oasis, while the surrounding cliffs and ghost gums create a classic outback scene. It’s a must-stop on the Larapinta Trail and a perfect spot for a cool dip after a walk.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, combining the short Ghost Gum Lookout walk with a swim. For the full experience, set aside half a day to tackle the Ormiston Pound Walk and enjoy a leisurely lunch by the water. If you’re hiking the Larapinta Trail, this is a common overnight stop (camping available).
