St George, a tiny settlement on the Lasseter Highway, is the last reliable fuel and supplies stop before the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This dusty outpost has a frontier feel, with a roadhouse serving as the social hub. It's less a destination and more a strategic pit stop, but its stark beauty and isolation give it a unique appeal for travelers crossing the Red Centre.
Highlights & What to See
- St George Roadhouse: The heart of the community, offering fuel, basic groceries, and hearty outback meals. It's a great spot to chat with fellow travelers and stock up before heading into the national park.
- Desert Views: The surrounding landscape is classic Central Australia – red dirt, spinifex, and endless horizons. Pull over for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset when the colors intensify.
- Mount Connor Lookout: A short detour east of St George offers a distant view of Mount Connor, a flat-topped mesa often mistaken for Uluru. It's a dramatic sight and a good photo opportunity.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, emus, and wedge-tailed eagles along the highway, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travelers only need 20–30 minutes to refuel, grab supplies, and stretch legs. If you're driving from Alice Springs or Yulara, it's a convenient 15-minute break. However, if you're camping, consider an overnight stay at the nearby Curtin Springs station (30 km east) to experience the outback night sky. St George itself has no accommodation, so plan accordingly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: The main draw, just 100 km west. Allow at least two days to see Uluru at sunrise/sunset and hike the Valley of the Winds.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): About 200 km north, offering the stunning Rim Walk. Best combined as a loop from Alice Springs.
- Curtin Springs Station: A working cattle station with camping, meals, and a famous outback pub. Great for a taste of station life.
- Mount Connor: Drive east on the Lasseter Highway for a closer view of this 300-meter-high mesa. There's a scenic lookout with interpretive signs.
- Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort): The tourist hub near Uluru, with accommodation, restaurants, and cultural activities. A 90-minute drive west.
