Lasseter Highway Scenic Drive
Stretching 244 km from the Stuart Highway near Erldunda to the iconic red-rock monolith of Uluru, the Lasseter Highway is the classic outback road trip that delivers the Red Centre's most dramatic landscapes. This sealed two-lane highway cuts through spinifex-covered plains, ancient desert oak forests, and low sandy hills, with the ever-present hum of cicadas and the occasional glimpse of a wedge-tailed eagle circling overhead. The drive is a journey into the heart of Aboriginal culture and geological wonder, best savored at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Connor Lookout – A few kilometres off the highway, this viewpoint offers a stunning panorama of the flat-topped mesa often mistaken for Uluru from a distance. Early morning light is magical.
- Curtin Springs Station – A working cattle station with a quirky roadhouse, cold beer, and a chance to see the famous 'Curtin Springs' birdlife. The owners are legendary for their outback hospitality.
- Yulara & Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – The highway ends at Yulara, the gateway to Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). Don't miss the sunset viewing area for the colour show on the rock.
- Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) – A 36-dome conglomerate formation just west of Uluru. The Valley of the Winds walk is a must-do for its otherworldly red domes and desert flora.
- Erldunda Roadhouse – The eastern terminus of the highway, a classic outback pit stop with a camel farm and a cold drink to kick off your journey.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day for the drive from the Stuart Highway to Uluru, including stops. Most travellers spend 2–3 days in the region to fully experience Uluru, Kata Tjuta, and the desert night sky. If you're short on time, a dawn-to-dusk dash is possible but you'll miss the soul of the place. For a deeper immersion, consider an overnight at Curtin Springs or the Yulara resort.
