On the edge of the red desert, Curtin Springs Station is a working cattle station that doubles as a classic outback roadhouse, offering a genuine taste of life in the Northern Territory. Located on the Lasseter Highway, 85 kilometres from Uluru, it’s an ideal stop for fuel, a cold beer, or a night under the stars. The property is known for its warm hospitality, birdlife, and the incredible sunset views over Mount Connor and the surrounding plains.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching at the Bore – The station’s bird hide overlooks a permanent waterhole, attracting hundreds of birds including budgerigars, zebra finches, and corellas, especially in the late afternoon.
- Sunset at Mount Connor Lookout – Just a short drive from the station, this viewpoint offers a spectacular panorama of the flat-topped mesa changing colour as the sun dips below the horizon.
- Self-guided Station Walk – A 2-kilometre loop takes you past old stockyards, a historic homestead, and interpretive signs about the region’s pastoral history.
- Hand-Feeding the Dingoes – The station’s resident dingoes are fed daily at 4pm, giving you a close-up look at Australia’s native wild dog.
- Stargazing – With minimal light pollution, the night sky here is incredible; the station often sets up telescopes for guests.

If you want to truly soak up the outback atmosphere, consider an overnight stay – the campground and cabins offer a comfortable base for exploring the area. A full day allows you to do the station walk, birdwatch, and catch sunset at Mount Connor before enjoying a campfire dinner.
